Why Analyze the Opposition?
Before we investigate the different aspects of opposition analysis, we’re going to spend some time looking at why teams all over the world put so much time and effort into it.
The video below gives an insight into how and why Derby County and the England national team analyze the opposition. Some concepts like information feedback to players are mentioned in the videos. Don’t worry too much about this at the moment. They’ll be covered later in the course.
For now, we’re focusing on the level of effort and attention to detail that goes into opposition analysis at the top level of the game.
Almost every professional team in the world, and many semi-professional, amateur and college teams now allocate considerable resources into opposition analysis. As the influence of technology has grown in the modern coaching process, the availability of video and data on upcoming opponents has also increased significantly.
We now see video and data analysts working alongside traditional scouts to give the coaching staff the best possible picture of their upcoming opponents.
Sam Lawson and Oliver Gage have experienced working for professional clubs in England, American colleges, and Major League Soccer. Here’s their thoughts on opposition analysis:
Head Coaches have the most at stake when it comes to winning and losing games. During his time in charge of Houston Dynamo in MLS, here’s what Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera told us about opposition analysis as well as University of Virginia Head Coach George Gelnovatch.
These valuable insights show a commitment from teams at the top level of the game to do everything possible to prepare for the opposition. Most professional clubs now have at least one dedicated Opposition Analyst, and this number grows to as many as 3 or 4 for the world’s biggest clubs.
Sam Lawson also gave us a real life example of how some of his insights helped his team prepare for a crucial game:
For this module’s task please add your thoughts on opposition analysis to the comments section below.
Why do you believe it’s important to analyze the opposition and what do you think can be gained from this process?
Do you currently do this and do you plan to do this in the future?
Once you’ve completed this please move on to the next module.
I believe it’s important to analyze the opponent so you can prepare your team on what’s to come on match day, you give players an idea of how the other team plays and what solutions we can give players ahead of time. Yes I currently do this and I am looking to improve in the near future.
Being able to utilise the information you collect & deliver it in small bite size to coaching staff & players is priceless, as tactical & technical information & data can help the team develop different strategies to deal with possible problems & solutions they might come up against.
Also it can be utilised to analyse own players performances & application on training, which ultimately serves the goal of overcoming the opposition based on individual & collective player & team profiles.
Analyzing the opposition is part of the prep, just like training on the field, watching film of the oppostion is providing details reading their style of play, key players, trends, how the play at home vs away, how they may chance their formation if they are winning vs loosing in the last 10 minutes of a game. Set pieces, how they build etc. This all leads to how you can best prepare your team, maybe this information helps the coaches train a specific element MD-1 vs MD-3, it also helps players get that extra bit of detail on a player they are directly up against etc. At the college level this is becoming a huge element of the role of the coach, I have had experience with this at the D1 ACC level.
It is important to analyze our opposition to get an advantage on them, we´re able to learn their tactics, attacking style, defensive style, how do they behave with or without the ball, etc. All this helps our team and makes our assingment easier.
I am currently not coaching a team so I am not able to implement this.
I think analysing the opposition is key for many reasons you can highlight the main different areas of team and individual styles of play in possession from building their attack to how they create and finally finish the attack. Then also helps to identify out-of-possession shapes and trends that can lead to weakness being highlighted that can ultimately lead to a chance for our team.

I think it’s important to analyze the opposition for a number of reason, as described in multiple of the videos the analysis shows how the opposition are looking to play and how their style of play both in possession and out of possession can be exploited. I think a lot can be gained from working 1v1 with a player on how to best his immediate opponent such as an outside back vs a winger to also gaining the knowledge of how your opponent can be beaten on that day as a whole. I do not currently analyze full team matches, I do however tend to analyze certain set pieces wether it’s a routine or the way a team defends them. Hopefully in the future I am able to analyze full matches.
This is important as it provides detailed knowledge on how the opposition plays, thier strengths and weknesses, thier tactical set up in possession and out of possession.
Tener identificado al rival al cual nos vamos a enfrentar es de vital importancia, ya que nos permite ejecutar un plan de trabajo mediante el cual se intenta minimizar las fortalezas del equipo a enfrentar y atacar sus debilidades.
Nowadays the game is very much about details, and if we manage to control the opponent’s details it is important to have full knowledge of our opponents, to know all the information necessary to prepare a strategy.
Importance of opposition analysis: ability to create familiarity of your opponent(s); prepare strategically/ tactically for your games; give additional/ personal insight on personnel, style of play, trends, etc.
I currently do this with all of my teams.
Analyzing the opposition is crucial because it provides a strategic advantage by offering additional insights that can potentially alter the course of a game, creating opportunities to secure a win. With a limited number of training sessions available to prepare for a match, having in-depth knowledge of how the opposition attacks and defends becomes invaluable. This information allows a team to tailor its preparations more effectively, identifying key patterns and tendencies that can be exploited. While I acknowledge the importance of opposition analysis, I haven’t delved into it in the level of detail required. Participating in a course focused on Opposition Scouting and analysis will undoubtedly equip me with the necessary skills to conduct thorough assessments. This newfound knowledge will enhance my coaching capabilities and contribute significantly to the team’s preparedness and performance on the field.
Opposition analysis is important as it provides much detail and insight to coaches and players on an upcoming opponent as possible. I hope to gain a better understanding of how this is done and to obtain any relevant templates that professional clubs use. I have done one such analysis and I plan to do so in the future.
It’s important to analyze the opponent to understand how they like to play, what patterns they rely on in different scenarios and so on. This information is good to know to shut down what they like to do and take them out of their game and also for our team to take advantage of their weaknesses. I’ve always done this in some form or another and I definitely plan and using it in the future in line with today’s technology.
it is very important to know as much as possible about your opposition so that you increase the probability of winning the game, also to gain an advantage over the opposition.it something that we will definitely implement in the future.
yeah,it was nice intro about the opposition anlysis.IT is so important to preoare according to oppositions strengths and weaknesses these days, i i tend to get into this topic in detail incoming weeks and months
Its important too analysis the upcoming opponents so you can work out , who the main players are, how they tend to set up at given times in the match. Including set pieces, ways they might take goal kicks etc. Then you can work out ways to combat and gain advantages from the data obtained.
Philosophically, I don’t think a coach can effectively prepare for a team as well as they can without opposition analysis. For our program, this is vital for our staff and athletes. Understanding tendencies in the five phases of the game, recognizing profiles of opposing players, and creating game plans based on the information gained provides a familiarity and level of confidence in our preparation.
We actively watch both live and recorded matches of opponents well in advance of both the match, as well as the upcoming training sessions, as well as meeting with players (Individual, small group, & full team) to provide brief video sessions that can highlight key features of the opponent for them to be best prepared. Our goal is to enhance our offerings to the players with our video to streamline our processes, and make all analysis details as readily available as possible in the upcoming season.
Opposition analysis is important in order to fully prepare a team to compete. If you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail. In my current coaching position, the majority of the work I do revolves around opposition analysis. My team has an established style of play, but is lacking in quality of players. Therefore, having a good game plan is crucial in order for us to succeed against stronger opposition. I also believe that doing providing players with evidence based analysis can help fill them with confidence and provide them with solutions in order to succeed early on in the game.
the opposition analysis is very important because we need to know about data of opponent to get more win percentage, how they play, what theirs strengths, what theirs weaknesess. so with thats all information coaching team can make the drills and tactics better depends on opponent.
I consider the analysis of the opponent to be very important as we can obtain very valuable information that generates an advantage in competition.
Currently I obtain information about opponents’ patterns of play from video but I do not carry out exploratory analysis or data collection. I would love in the future to be able to have the means to facilitate data collection so that I can be more thorough in the information I can obtain from my opponents for my team.
Alot can be gained, cos the information gathered from oppostion analysis can allow the coaching team to create ways in which to stop opponents from creating their best patters during games
Its important for coaching staff to know the way an opponent plays, so as to be able to work on those situations which are more likely to happen during the game and not be caught offguard. The difference between winning and losing couod be how effective can we stop our oppostion from doing the things they love to/know how to do best.
I believe it’s really important for player’s and staff to see trends and patterns of play of the opposition in the lead up to a game. We don’t currently do this as much as I would like but I would like to do this more effectively and efficiently.
Having knowledge about your rival will help us understand their strengths and weaknesses. Knowing this, we can plan and be ready for the game. There are many factors that an opposition analyst has to take into account: The playing style that they use in different phases of the game, their weaknesses, their strengths, how they play with and without the ball, how they transition, individual players characteristics and the set pieces.
My goal is to join an organization and contribute to the organization with my skills that I will and have adopt and learnt from my trainings
At the highest level, it’s impossible not to take into account such an important stakeholder as the opponent. The complexity associated with football is as much down to our team’s dynamics as those of our opponents. Without completely adapting to our opponent, we need to get to know them. In order to consider our game plan, imagine certain scenarios before the match and adjust certain drills in training
Knowing how your opponent plays ofcourse helps you to make tactical plans for the game. In my view more opposition analysis is important to defend and attack better in transition.
Analyzing the opposition gives the coach and the team a chance to better prepared for the next match, as mentioned in many of the videos. If you have an outlined observation of the opponent’s 4 moments of the game (in possession of the ball, out of possession, transition attack-defense, transition defense-attack), you can build a tactical plan that breaks down the opposition and favors your team during the 90 minutes. At the youth level, we currently don’t do this a lot. That is manly due to lack of time and resources. It becomes important, however, before tournament finals and playoffs to take a look at the opponent’s key players, their set piece strategy, and a general outlook on their style of play.
Opposition analysis gives you a competitive advantage and helps the coaches tailor sessions toward the coach’s game plan to nullify the opposition’s strengths and exploit weaknesses.
Analyzing the opposition can help us understand their motivations and thought processes. We can use this information to better prepare ourselves and our arguments, and to find common ground. It can also help us identify flaws in our own thinking and improve our own positions.
Oppostion Analysis is important because it allows you to know/have knowledge of your opponents next move. Which will in turn guide the planning process when facing such opposition.
I think it is important to analyse your next opponents because it gives the coaching staff and players a general idea of what they will be up against, the teams weaknesses and strengths in and out of possession, key player in that team and how to neutralise them. and with the advancement of new technological tools it becomes much more simpler for an analyst to get information on a team. its not meant to predict what will happen but rather facilitate good decision making when ”X” situation arises because you’d be much more informed.
yes I currently do this because it helps the coaching staff tailor the training sessions according to the next match demands.
Opposition analysis is very important to know the opposition’s tactics, strengths and weaknesses, and to know the keys to his game and his most important players
I hope to do that one day with a big club
Opposition analysts are a must for any club
I feel opposition analysis is really necessary. Every team should analyse their opponents to gain an upper hand. Knowing the opposition helps our players gain confidence.
Where access exists it can and does inform how we prepare. Whilst our approach is retain our core patterns and principles, we are better informed to prepare for how these may come to life on the pitch with this information. This also shapes our Thursday ‘scout team’ session.
i think its very important to analyze the opposition. Players get tools to prevent dangerous moves or for their 1:1.. where can we have advantage and what should we not do… individual and group moves of opposition is great to know
It helps with understanding how your opponent’s play and gives you the advantage of preparing to attack the weakest link in the team.
Gives 99% preparations for Games
Helps prepare for the Match by understanding opponent strengths and weaknesses.
Then we r able to mitigate our weaknesses in comparison to there strengths also we r able to use the weaknesses as a loophole
it is important to analyze the opposition team before our game because these give a us a one step to win the game or to understand how to attack ,where is the spaces we are looking for and who are the best players and where is weakness
yes I’m doing this right now with my team
Very good
Helps prepare for the Match by understanding opponent strengths and weaknesses. We do this if we have footage on opponent or have watched them play.
Understand Strengths ,Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats from this you would structure your training sessions around the analysis conducted and contract a game play to counter act their gameplan.
Opposition analysis allows you to provide coaches and players with information, depending on the level, that information can be used in different ways. The closer you get to the professional or performance level, the more that analysis will help you to win games. We’re currently very video heavy in our opposition scouts, we use data in a limited capacity to support our beliefs around a team or individuals within the coaching staff, and players receive video presentations that will relate to on-field preparations, all relating to our principles.
It is important to analyze opponents type of play so that you have an understanding on their game and plan effectively.
In order to have an understanding of your opponent, we must know their strengths and weakness, so we will be able to face them and compete.
Its important to know the attacking and defense structure, as well as identify opponent’s trends and characteristic trait.
If we can generate data of the games, we will support the coaching staff tor create the game plan preparation.
Analyzing the opposition helps the coaching staff to have a framework for how the opposing team will likely play in the upcoming match. There may be slight tactical adjustments, but analyzing a series of games will reveal a set of tactical principals to build against. Analysis may also predict how the opposition may try to set up against your team. Therefore, you will have an idea of how to exploit their weaknesses and to protect yours. All of these elements can help to inform the players – who are ultimately responsible for the decisions and actions being taken on the field.
I currently do a very limited amount of opposition analysis. The primary reason is simply a limit on time, and the secondary reason would be a lack of data or video on the opposition teams. Much of the analysis and adjustments that we make are “in game”.
You have better chances to win a game, if you know the opposition better. You can prepare better on the training pitch too, if you know what kind of situations could come in the weekend and you can modeling these situations in training. You could see if the opponent stronger or weaker in defense or in attack or maybe more vulnerable in transitions and find many other valuable informations about them.
As a player I did this regularly, and now I’m learning how to do it better as a scout or an analyst.
Knowing how the opposition operates through all phases of play gives you a better understanding of how the game could potentially play out when you face them, so not analysing the opposition runs the risk of not knowing what your win condition is which can hamper your teams chances of victory.
I’m not employed with a club but in my spare time, I like to watch old football games, size up the team lineups and try to work out how both teams will play through formations and player profiles. For a non-football example, I play a third person shooter called Splatoon where at a competitive level or in ranked modes, I’ll study the teams composition to know what their strong points are and what can be exploited in their set-up.
I believe it’s important to analyze the opposition so you and your team can gain a better understanding of what the opposition is trying to do both on and off the ball. By analyzing patterns of play and both their shape when attacking as well as defending, you can both minimize their strengths and attack their weaknesses.
I currently do not analyze opposition, however, I would love to join a team that would be open to analyzing other sides.
It is imperative that we analyze the opposition ahead of time so we have a predetermined and cohesive plan that seeks to negate their strengths and exposes their weaknesses. This sort of prematch preparation has a key correlation to success and picking up positive results. This analysis does not change the way in which we play necessarily or alter our overarching principles, but it can inform us on small adjustments or tinkers we can make to our style or shape to give us the best chance of winning the match. I already do this with the team I manage, yes.
