One of the most important aspects of an evidence-informed culture is how we use this information to change our behavior.
So far, we’ve defined what we expect from our Players and Teams. We’ve also created benchmarks or KPI’s to indicate the quality of certain areas of their performances. Now it’s time to switch focus to how to use this information.
Ernst Tanner
Lucy Rushton and Matt Pilkington explain how insights from analysis must influence training design.
Lucy goes on to address the idea of feeding back data and video to players, before working on these areas on the training field. This idea is reciprocated by Wilmer Cabrera and Ewan Sharp.
In this module’s first task we’re going to use some MLS data to track some KPI’s.
Please download the spreadsheet below and open the task document.

Training Methods Task Data
What do you think we could do to help players who are experiencing a dip in form? How do you think this differs for a player on a team who has no data or video? Can you think of a time where you may have missed an issue because of the Misinformation Effect? Please add these comments at the bottom of this module.
The second task is to record our thoughts on this subject in our ongoing document. The following questions may be useful to think about:
How will we manage team vs individual needs?
How often will we review the information you collect?
If a concerning pattern is highlighted, how will we address it?
Would our methods change depending on what the pattern is?
Will we act on positive patterns and reinforce positive actions?
Feel free to discuss this in the comments below.
To help a player experiencing a dip in form, especially a striker is to understand what the player has been doing wrong or what he has being doing right before the dip in form and certainly not doing anymore, this could be his movement into the box or lost in sharpness (especially for Fox in the box kind of strikers)
Then the next thing is to design training program to help him return to form
I will dedicate a video session for the team every week to discuss our mistakes and how to address them. Additionally, I will speak with each individual about what is expected of them on the field and how to apply my ideas in practice.
I would manage the teams needs in the changing room after the game or before a training session when explaining what we are working on for the session and why. With regards to individual needs this will be discussed privately and then if a specific element of training is relevant to a player they will get the heads up and an explanation.
All information needs to be review by the management/Coaching staff after the event, whether that’s training or a game. So that we can prepare the correct solution in training or give the right messages before a game.
Data and analyst is important to back up the process and what the coaches have decided to lead with in the sessions.
In my opinion, we have to have players who can convey our philosophy well, and then adapt the players to it, I can have a very strong dribbling player in midfield, but if I want a player with possession, perhaps we can adapt that player in a position where I can even anticipate that action, and then we can analyze that player individually and understand if they are complying with the philosophy, for example I have a creative midfielder who doesn’t pass between lines, perhaps we have to address this situation and understand the because, and work more individually on this aspect
How will we manage team vs individual needs?
Team needs addressed in training sessions and analysis meetings, individually in private.
How often will we review the information you collect?
Regularly for sure.
If a concerning pattern is highlighted, how will we address it?
Talking to the individual to find out the reason why.
Would our methods change depending on what the pattern is?
If need be, yes.
Will we act on positive patterns and reinforce positive actions?
Yes, definitely
it important to always keep an eye on individual players because they contribute to the overall performance of the team, so we need to review the performance after each and every game to be able to go and correct it or improve it in the training session.
As we can see, data analysis in players is important to evaluate each player and where we are able to improve the individual and the team. Without data is almost impossible to found out this information.
How will we manage team vs individual needs?
We must reinforce players to evaluate and find the best way to compete in every environment because we will face many team with different structures and characteristics. That will give us a better understanding and formation for the team.
How often will we review the information you collect?
Every 3/4 games
If a concerning pattern is highlighted, how will we address it?
Speak with the players and find a solution together
Would our methods change depending on what the pattern is?
We will adjust it
Will we act on positive patterns and reinforce positive actions?
Yes, reinforce and improve will make increase our acts
